Zen Heart Sangha was founded in 1993 as a
non-residential lay practice group in the lineage of
Shunryu Suzuki Roshi of San Francisco Zen Center
and his dharma heir, Les Kaye Roshi of Kannon
Do Zen Center in Mountain View.
The group is guided by Misha Shungen Merrill, who
received dharma transmission (permission to teach) from
Kaye Roshi In 1998. Over the last fifteen years, the ZHS
sangha (community) has grown to include students from the
San Francisco Bay area, Sacramento, and New York.
Zazen (sitting meditation) is the heart of our practice with
emphasis on the meditation style of shikantaza (‘just sitting’),
a practice passed down from our 13thc. ancestor, Eihei
Dogen. We offer zazen and kinhin (walking meditation)
every Monday evening, as well as a lecture on all but the
first Monday of the month. We also have a full morning
program on the first and third Saturday of every month which
includes study and discussion of various Buddhist teachings.
There are several retreats of various lengths during the year
and celebrations of major Buddhist holidays.
Practice opportunities and teachings at ZHS are offered
freely in the Buddhist spirit of dana, the practice of
generosity. The support of our teacher and program is
made possible by the voluntary donations of our community.
