Two months after the Buddha’s enlightenment he gave his first discourse to five students
in the Deer Park outside Varanasi. The subject of this talk, known as the First Turning of
the Wheel, is the four noble truths and the eightfold path. We will take up the study of
this teaching and explore together how we can actualize it in our daily life.
All are welcome to participate, whatever your tradition or practice. Preparation is not
necessary; those who are interested may want to read The First Discourse of the Buddha,
by Dr. Rewata Dhamma. Thich Nhat Hanh, in The Heart of the Buddha’s Teaching, has
written on the four noble truths.
